Did you know that Tokyo has a third airport? It’s located in the western Tokyo suburb of Chofu. It was originally a WWII airbase used to protect Tokyo, and is now a commercial airport with both general aviation facilities and scheduled service to the Izu islands by a small carrier called New Central Air Services.
It has a little terminal that is dedicated to the airline, compete with everything a terminal would have – a dedicated check-in area, sales counter, security, waiting area and even an observation platform on the second story.
It is a charming little facility. Flights to the islands are quite frequent and reasonably priced. A round trip to Oshima is 22,000 yen for a round trip for the 40 minute flight. Significantly more convenient than the ferry.
